Boric acid a multipurpose solution in hands

Hydrohen borate aka orthoboric acid is a ‘boron based acid’ which exists in the form of crystals or white colored powder. Chemically formulated as H3BO3, it is commercially called boric or boracic acid. It is also called sassolite while occurring as a mineral. In the modern times, it was first prepared via borax in the late 16th century but history has it that Greeks used such mixtures for cleaning and most importantly preserving foods.

Though this white powder has innumerous benefits and practical uses, only some are popularly known, like say household purposes. Some other known and even not so known uses of this borax acid powder are mentioned as below:

  • Now this would come as a surprise; the good old silly putty has boric acid (in the combination of silicone oil) as one of the ingredients.

  • The cosmetics’ industry utilizes it in products like eye washes, external skin treatments and some powders.

  • It is also used in nutrition supplements (not in powdered or wet form) but with strict regulatory norms.

  • In smaller percentiles, furniture, mattresses and insulation use Boric acid powder due to its flame retardant properties.

  • As boric acid powder has good high temperature resistance properties, microwaveable dishes, lab glasses and even halogen light bulbs use it.

  • In terms of domestic purposes, boric acid powder helps us to fight the menace of cockroaches, flea infestation, ants, silverfish and other such insects.

  • Some medicines manufactured for the treatment of acne, yeast and fungal infections use boric acid.

  • Known for its antiseptic properties, boric acid is often used in salves and dressings.

  • A good number of uses of boric acid are in combination of different elements like with ethylene glycol to protect wood from fungus and insects attacks.

  • Boric acids are also known to be used for its lubrication properties.

  • It can also be used in the form of a colorant while making ‘fire green’.

  • The welding flux also has small amounts of boric acid.

In addition, boric acid in other forms is used in some uncommon applications as well.
