Charging Tips for Rechargeable Batteries

Batteries are necessary for different appliances ranging from a simple torch to digital cameras. These batteries are considered to be one of the most useful innovations made by mankind. Compared to the ordinary batteries, these are long lasting and efficient. Though these batteries are far more expensive than the ordinary batteries, it requires fewer replacements. But rechargeable batteries need to be charged when it is discharged. However, certain tips should be followed before recharging these batteries.

There are many types of rechargeable batteries available today. Some of the most common varieties include the Nickel Metal Hydride, Nickel Cadmium and Lithium Ion. Among these varieties, the Lithium Ion batteries tend to last for a longer period of time. It is comparatively more expensive than the other types of batteries.                                                                                  

Rechargeable batteries require special care so that it lasts longer. There are some useful tips that need to be followed to obtain maximum benefit.

It is important never to overcharge your rechargeable batteries. Manufacturers specify certain directions for battery care and storage. These directions must be strictly followed.

Never leave discharged for a long period of time. This will shorten the life span of the batteries. It is necessary to charge these batteries every six to nine months even if it is unused after the initial charge.

Charge batteries at room temperature as batteries tend to heat up while recharging. However, most of the batteries and chargers are designed to prevent overheating.

It is important to charge the batteries a few hours before use as rechargeable batteries lose a part of their power when it is unplugged from the charger.

Use chargers which are specifically designed for rechargeable batteries. Never charge ordinary batteries in these chargers as it can cause ruptures or leakages.

The battery surfaces should be kept clean before charging the batteries. Dirty surfaces can hinder proper and effective charging. It is easy to clean the contact surfaces of the battery. You can use a cloth or rub the surfaces with alcohol.

Rechargeable batteries last for a long period of time if it is maintained properly.
