Functions And Features Of Power Transformers

A power transformer is basically a device which is used to convert voltage or electricity to a lower or higher value so that it can alter the current flow required for specific electrical applications. It is used to regulate the flow of current to commercial buildings and residencies without overloading the circuitries. It therefore acts as a device that offers adequate protection while using electric current in homes and other spaces.

These transformers perform two basic functions which include transferring electric current from a specific source to a destination and regulating the voltage of the current before it approaches the destination. These devices are large units which forms a part of the grid system. However, it is also available as small devices which help to regulate the flow of voltage and current to the electrical appliances used daily.

Majority of the electrical appliances include some type of power transformers. Even a sound system used in theaters includes transformers to protect the devices from damages caused due to high voltages. Although these transformers are seldom used in small devices nowadays, it is still used in sub stations and power grids to control high voltages and frequent voltage fluctuations.

One of the key reasons to use these transformers is safety. It is impossible to use electrical appliances without the use of these devices as it would include great risk. A power voltage transformer system is used in most of the companies as it facilitates in auto- shut down of electrical appliances during an overload or power surge. It therefore prevents electrical appliances from being destroyed or damaged completely.

Transformers are available in a huge range of sizes to suit different specific purposes. Regardless of its size, it functions similarly and operates on the same technology.

Today power transformers are available in different sizes and styles such as open style design, conservator type design, sealed tank design and automatic gas pressure design. The modern transformers are designed to lower the loss of energy. Modern transformers are designed to be more energy efficient. These transformers also contribute towards reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
